As the nights grow colder, it’s time to think about switching your duvet to a heavier tog rating to stay warm and cosy throughout the winter months. But when exactly should you make the change?

Here’s a guide on when to switch to a heavier duvet and how to choose the right one for winter comfort.

What Is a Tog Rating?

The tog rating measures a duvet’s ability to trap warm air. The higher the tog rating, the warmer the duvet. Tog ratings typically range from 2.5 tog (ideal for summer) to 15 tog (the warmest available for winter).

  • Summer duvets: 2.5 – 4.5 tog
  • Spring/autumn duvets: 7.5 – 10.5 tog
  • Winter duvets: 12 – 15 tog

When to Switch to a Heavier Tog

The best time to switch to a heavier duvet is when nighttime temperatures consistently drop below 15°C. This usually happens between late October and early November, depending on where you live in the UK. If you’re already noticing that you’re waking up feeling cold or needing extra blankets, it’s time to bring out the heavier duvet.

  • Tip: Monitor the weather forecast to see when temperatures are expected to dip and make the switch accordingly.

Choosing the Right Winter Duvet

Your ideal tog rating for winter depends on how warm you like to be at night and whether you sleep in a well-insulated room. A 12-13.5 tog duvet should be sufficient for most UK homes during winter. However, if you live in a particularly cold house or tend to feel the cold more than others, a 15 tog duvet might be a better choice.

Natural vs. Synthetic Fillings

When choosing a duvet, consider whether you want a natural filling (like down or feather) or a synthetic filling (like hollowfibre or microfibre).

  • Natural fillings are lightweight, breathable, and provide excellent insulation, making them a good choice for cold weather. However, they can be more expensive and may not be suitable for allergy sufferers.
  • Synthetic fillings are more affordable, hypoallergenic, and easier to care for. While they might be slightly heavier than natural fillings, modern synthetic duvets can still provide excellent warmth.

Alternative Layering Options

If you’re not ready to switch to a heavier duvet, you can try layering up with extra blankets or throws to keep warm. Electric blankets are also a good option for quickly warming up your bed before sleep.

Changing to a higher tog duvet will help you stay warm and comfortable as winter sets in, ensuring restful sleep even on the coldest nights.
